I know that it might seem a little bit strange to write a review about Greensboro in our blog about Chicago, but seeing as we are still here for the summer and it has been our home for the past 5 years, I thought it would be nice to look back and reflect on my favorite things about this city.
1.) Things To Do
-Hiking: While Guilford County doesn't exactly have a mountainous terrain to battle the earth on, the city of Greensboro is still home to a good number of hiking and biking trails, many of which are interconnected as part of North Carolina's Mountains to Sea Trail. The majority of the trails wind around Lake Brandt and Lake Higgins, and they are a great place if you enjoy birdwatching. The only downside is that a few of the trails that circle around the lakes also tend to border some backyards and you may feel a little bit close to trespassing.
-Central City Park: This little park, only a few blocks from our apartment, is a great place to hang out on a cool summer night or a comfortable spring afternoon. It may not be as massive as Central Park as it occupies only one city block, but it makes up for its size in its quality landscaping. In the middle of the park there is a really nice fountain which, every five minutes or so, has a water show that is fun to watch, and apparently fun for kids to run through.
-Eastern Music Festival: I may have a little bit of an invested interest in this, as I played here the previous summer, but the Eastern Music Festival at Guilford College is home to some of the finest classical music in the Southeast. For six weeks every summer, 200 of the most talented students in music come to Guilford College to perform and to learn. There are 3 main concerts every week (two student orchestras and the immensely talented Eastern Philharmonic Orchestra) and also a number of smaller chamber music and pops concerts. If you're in Greensboro in the summer, I highly suggest that you go.
-Greensboro Grasshoppers Baseball: Greensboro's newly built NewBridge Bank Park is quite possibly the greatest addition the city of Greensboro has ever made to their city. The park, located downtown, is bursting with fun a few days a week and even has fireworks on the field every Friday night. My favorite parts of the games are Babe, the black Labrador who runs the bases and retrieves the bats, and the locally brewed beer from Natty Greenes and Red Oak.
Well, that's about all I can bear to write for now so stay tuned next time for more of Phil's favorite Greensboro leisure activities!
